Opportunities at our church and organizations we support
There are always positions within the church body that need to be filled. This page lists current opportunities to serve.
St. Paul's Parish Restoration Project Volunteers.
Parishioners from St. Thomas' and St. Paul's are working together to renovate St. Paul's Church in Fort Chipewyan. This church is an historical building and at , one time, was the cathedral for the Diocese of Athabasca. Recently, in recognition of it's history, the building has been designated by Archbishop John R. Clarke as the Pro-Cathedral of the Diocese. Times and dates will be announced in the near future. If you are interested in being part of this venture, please contact us.
Summer Bible School Teachers*
Summer Bible School is one part of the ministry of
On Eagle’s Wings. Volunteer
teachers from all over Canada and the United States apply to teach the curriculum
that is written by the On Eagle’s Wings staff. Together, southern and northern
volunteers teach the children in many remote villages of northern Canada. Southern
volunteers who are guests of the community grow in their awareness of God’s presence
in aboriginal cultures and faith communities. Northern volunteers learn how, they too,
can teach their own children. Teachers enjoy the privilege it is to nurture a child’s
sense of belonging and identity in God’s family. In using the curriculum they share
Bible stories in real, relevant and relational ways.
The On Eagle’s Wings Summer Bible School has traditionally been a five-day program. Most volunteers make a commitment for one or more weeks, plus their travel time. Northern children are glad that southern volunteers arrive and want to spend as much time as possible together. There is opportunity for lots of informal time with the children. The children are usually between the ages of 4 and 12 years.
Applications for the 2009 season are now being accepted. If you are interested in this wonderful ministry click on this link:

Sexton
According to Wikipedia, the general duties of a sexton may include (but are not limited to):
- Operation and maintenance of mechanical systems, such as fridges, boilers, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units, hot water systems, kitchen equipment, and piping systems (i.e. gas, water, fire protection, and sewer systems).
- Operation and maintenance of electrical and instrument systems, such as a power distribution system, security/communication system, fire alarms, telephone wiring and computer LAN systems.
- Liaison with routine contract maintenance & supply companies
regarding fire and safety, pest control and cleaning, etc.
Ordering/receiving supplies and equipment. - Aesthetic appearance, security, and fire protection.
- Logistics for events on church calendar (chairs/tables, lighting, acoustics, audio/video, etc)
- Emergency response during bad weather, etc.
- Other building and grounds tasks not handled by a contract service and/or church volunteers, such as the replacement of ceiling light bulbs, returning premises to a neat and orderly state following services and events, disposal of rubbish, and running any local errands or trips that are needed by the church.
Now, we are not so sure that the person we are looking for need be responsible for all of the above. After all, a sexton's duties once included the digging of the graves in the parish cemetery. We certainly are not expecting that considering we don't even have a cemetery. Nor are we assuming that the selected person would be required to do all the labour involved in keeping the church property in good shape. Rather, we are looking for someone that would take responsibility to make sure the above chores are completed either through volunteer work or the hiring of contract labour.
Currently, this is an unpaid position but one that comes with responsibility and pride. If you are interested in this position please contact us or phone the office for more details.
Office Receptionist and Assistant
We want somebody to volunteer their time to assist in the office
Tuesday to Friday. Your job would primarily involve being a
receptionist, answering the phone, greeting people as they come in. In
addition, you would be providing help to Rose. Hey, she makes a good cup
of coffee. If you would like to help in this important ministry please
Contact Us Form.
Web Page Administrators
You wouldn't be seeing this if you were not currently viewing it on
St. Thomas' new Website. If you possess the skills to get this far, you
probably have enough skills to assist in the development and maintenance
tasks that lie ahead. You see, part of the site is going to have
features, which will allow page editing remotely by people who have
limited typing skills and a desire to contribute to make changes to the
site remotely, even from the comfort of their home. If you are
interested in helping out, please
contact the webmaster.
